Coast Guard Documentation Renewal: What Has Changed?
Recreational documentation renewals currently offer one through five years at $26 per year. Check your certificate and use the official Coast Guard renewal instructions.
“I thought this had to be renewed for five years?” That was the rule behind the older version of this post. The renewal choices have changed.
Check the current renewal choices
The Coast Guard's September 2025 renewal instructions allow recreational renewals for one through five years, at $26 for each year selected. That is $130 for five years. Commercial endorsements follow a different renewal cycle. Check the current instructions before submitting payment, particularly if the certificate has expired or ownership has changed.
Use the official starting point
An official-looking renewal letter may come from a private processing service. Those services can charge their own fees. Start at the National Vessel Documentation Center if you want to handle the renewal yourself, and distinguish the government fee from an optional service charge.

Length alone does not settle eligibility, and the loan program may have its own documentation requirements. Let us check the actual boat and closing requirements before choosing a path.
