Choosing a Boat Insurance Agent: Start With the Conversation
Tell your insurance agent where you will keep the boat, where you will run it and what you plan to do with it. Those answers matter more than finding the cheapest-looking quote. I can coordinate the financing side; your agent should explain the coverage.
Before asking an insurance agent for a price, tell them the boating story. Where will you keep it? Where will you run it? How will you use it? A useful quote starts with the actual boat and your plans.
Tell the whole boating story
Where will you keep it? Where will you run it? Who will operate it? Is this family recreation, or will anyone pay to come aboard? Give the agent the real answers before asking for a price.
Ask which insurers the agent can approach and why a proposed policy fits. Do not assume every specialist represents every carrier, or that your existing agent cannot arrange suitable marine coverage.
Ask what happens when something goes wrong
A useful agent should be able to point you to the policy language behind an answer. Ask about deductibles, navigation limits, storm requirements, exclusions and the claims process. If an answer is unclear, ask for it in writing.
My part is coordinating the financing requirements with the closing team. Your insurance professional's part is explaining the coverage. Getting those conversations started early is much easier than discovering a mismatch when everyone is ready to close.
