Charter Plans? Discuss Financing and Endorsements First

Thinking about running charters to help make the payment? Tell me before we choose the loan. We need financing that allows that use, insurance that fits it and the proper operating authority. A recreational loan approval does not take care of those other pieces.

Quick answer
Thinking about running charters to help make the payment? Tell me before we choose the loan. We need financing that allows that use, insurance that fits it and the proper operating authority. A recreational loan approval does not take care of those other pieces.

“I'll just run a few charters to help with the payment.” That is something we need to discuss at the beginning, not after the recreational loan closes.

Describe the operation

Will you carry paying passengers with a captain? Offer a bareboat arrangement? Put the vessel into a managed program? Where will it operate, who will operate it, and what will the owner actually do? Labels alone do not explain the arrangement.

The financing program must allow the intended use. The insurer needs the same information. Neither approval substitutes for Coast Guard or other operating requirements.

An endorsement is not the whole answer

Documentation, passenger limits, captain credentials and inspection requirements depend on the operation. It is not accurate to say every charter vessel needs the same inspection or that a recreational endorsement permits all paid activity.

For some foreign-built vessels, MARAD's Small Vessel Waiver Program can address a U.S.-build requirement for qualifying passenger service. It does not waive Coast Guard documentation, manning or inspection requirements. A waiver is not a general permission slip to run any commercial operation.

Get the right people involved

Bring the proposed operation to us, your marine insurance professional and the appropriate maritime authorities or qualified adviser before committing to the boat. Do not build a purchase budget around expected charter income until the permitted use and financing treatment are understood.
