Credit Bureaus: The Report Is Not the Loan Decision

Your credit report is the record. Your score is a model's interpretation of that record. The lender makes the loan decision. An excellent score helps, but it does not tell the lender what you earn or whether the boat and loan amount fit.

Quick answer
Your credit report is the record. Your score is a model's interpretation of that record. The lender makes the loan decision. An excellent score helps, but it does not tell the lender what you earn or whether the boat and loan amount fit.

There are three different things in this conversation: your report, your score and the lender's decision. Mixing them together makes the process harder to understand.

Start with the report

A credit report contains information about reported accounts, balances, payment history and other credit activity. Reports can differ between bureaus because the information supplied and its timing can differ.

A score is calculated from report information using a particular model. It is not the report itself, and it does not contain the whole story of your finances.

The lender still has work to do

Your income, the proposed payment, comparable borrowing experience, the boat and the loan structure all matter to underwriting. A credit report is not proof of your current income. How income is evaluated or documented depends on the program and application.

This is why a bureau cannot promise you a boat loan, and why an excellent score does not finish the application.

If something is wrong

Identify the actual account or entry, rather than just saying the score seems too low. Use the reporting company's dispute process and contact the business that supplied the information. Keep the supporting records. Accurate information gives us a better starting point for an honest financing conversation.
