Who Does What in a Boat Loan?
I help you work through the boat and the financing choices. Our processors organize the file, the lender makes its credit decision, and our closers coordinate the paperwork and funds. In a private sale, we help manage the closing so you and the seller are not left trying to assemble it yourselves.
You should not have to become the project manager for your own boat loan. But knowing who does what makes the process a lot less mysterious.
My job: understand the deal and explain the route
I start with you, the boat and what you are trying to accomplish. Then we look at which programs may fit and what the proposed structure means. I help connect the questions and keep you informed; the lender makes its credit decision.
Processing and underwriting: get the file ready and evaluate it
Processors help collect and organize the required information. The lender evaluates the application, collateral and program requirements and identifies any conditions. A request for another document is not necessarily a new decision—it may be an item needed to complete the existing one.
Closing: bring the transaction together
Our closers coordinate the documents and funds needed to complete the purchase. Ownership records, seller payoff information, insurance and signatures must agree with the transaction being financed. Some documents can be signed electronically; others need an original ink signature or a notary. Scans help us review sooner, but the required originals have to be received and reviewed before the file goes into the funding queue.
In a brokered sale, the broker often helps obtain information and documents from the seller. In a private sale, our team helps manage the closing work that a seller would otherwise be trying to figure out alone.
Other professionals have their own roles
A surveyor or mechanic evaluates the scope of condition work you hire them to perform. An insurance professional explains and arranges coverage. Legal or tax questions may need the relevant adviser. None of these roles should be confused with an unconditional promise that the boat, title or loan is risk-free.
