Why Boat Loans Get Declined—even With a Good Score

A good score does not solve every part of a boat loan. Sometimes the missing piece is comparable borrowing history. Sometimes it is income, the boat or the amount requested. Let's find out which issue stopped the deal before sending you through another application.

Quick answer
A good score does not solve every part of a boat loan. Sometimes the missing piece is comparable borrowing history. Sometimes it is income, the boat or the amount requested. Let's find out which issue stopped the deal before sending you through another application.

“But I have a good score.” That is a good starting point. It does not eliminate every other part of underwriting.

The requested loan may exceed demonstrated experience

A strong score built from smaller accounts may not establish comparable borrowing for the amount requested. Significant assets or a mortgage do not automatically substitute for the experience a particular recreational program requires.

The boat or structure may not fit

The age, type, use or available wholesale valuation may fall outside a program. A borrower can be financially strong and still choose collateral that does not work for that lender.

The payment, qualifying income, existing obligations and requested amount also have to fit together. Income documentation requirements differ; do not assume self-employment always requires the same records in every program.

Read the reason and ask questions

Review the lender's adverse-action information and any explanation provided. If an error affected the decision, address the error. If the issue is loan size or collateral, a score-improvement project may not solve it.

Another program, a different boat or a different structure may be worth discussing. None is an automatic rescue. I would rather explain the obstacle honestly than send you through more applications without a clear reason.
