Why Work With an Agent Who Understands Marine Insurance?
Choose an agent who understands your boat and how you will use it. That may be your current agent or a marine specialist. Ask them to explain the coverage, not just the price. My team handles the financing requirements; your insurance professional handles the policy advice.
You want someone who understands what you mean when you describe the boat and how you will use it. That is the value of marine experience—not a guarantee attached to a job title.
Ask how the agent evaluates your plans
Can they explain the navigation limits? Do they ask about operators, storage, storms and any charter use? Can they walk through what happens if you have a loss away from home?
Your existing home and auto agent may have suitable options. A dedicated marine agency may offer others. Ask which insurers and policy choices each can actually provide rather than assuming anyone represents the entire market.
Compare like with like
An attractive premium is not the whole comparison. Look at insured value, deductibles, exclusions, permitted use and the assistance available when you need it. Ask the agent to explain meaningful differences in writing.
Make the closing requirements part of the conversation
The financing team will provide the lender's insurance instructions. Your agent should confirm how the policy meets those requirements and when coverage takes effect.
My role is to help coordinate the financing. I want you working with someone who can answer the insurance questions clearly, without either of us pretending that the loan approval replaces a careful coverage decision.
